Northern Michigan Golf Guide – Michigan Golf Courses and Resorts

Boyne Highlands – The Heather

BOYNE’s very first golf course, The Heather by Robert Trent Jones has stood the test of time as an elite, best of the best, championship course. Its wonderful test of golf, combined with some of the most premier playing conditions in the mid-west, is why the Golf Association of Michigan selected The Heather as the host site for the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011.

Ranked as one of the “Top 100 Courses You Can Play ” by Golf Magazine, and “50 Best Courses for Women” by Golf for Women.  Take your shots along wide tree-lined fairways, while manuvering your way around sculpted bunkers and daunting water hazards. The Heather boasts a masterful combination of challenging shots and beautiful scenery.  Explore all of BOYNE’s Michigan golf resorts and courses today.

Caddie service is available with advance reservation to enhance your experience when playing The Heather.  Rates for a walking caddie are $45 + gratuity, per person for 18 holes.  To reserve your caddie, please call the Caddie Reservation line at 231.526.3138.

Boyne Highlands – The Arthur Hills

The Arthur Hills course opens Friday, April 29.

The Arthur Hills course bears all the markings of the master designer. Beginning with a wide, bunker-dotted fairway and continuing to a narrowing approach – and fascinating green complex, this deceptively challenging course provides sufficient variety and complexity to test the most experienced golfer.

After the course turns, its character continues to evolve. The approach to the 11th hole, a lengthy par-5, begins a three-hole ascent to one of the highest points in the region and the magnificent view from the 13th tee. The round then concludes with conviction – a 577 yard monster of a par-5 that is reachable in two for those brave – or experienced – enough to attempt the long hit.

When the Arthur Hills first caught the attention of Michigan’s golfing elite, it quickly earned a reputation as an essential test, bolstered by its brilliant design, superb course conditions and breathtaking good looks – all of which were showcased on Big Break X: Michigan, the Golf Channel’s popular golf travelogue.

Gaylord Country Club

Founded in 1924, Gaylord Country Club is one of northern Michigan’s oldest golf clubs. This semi-private club meanders through the hills and hardwoods just west of Gaylord and features private club conditions, strategic bunkering and arguably the best green complexes found in northern Michigan.

Unlike today’s modern golf courses, which can take more time to play, Gaylord Country Club is a classic parkland design reminiscent of the early 20th century courses featuring close proximity from greens to tees and a variety of designed holes allowing for a more enjoyable round in less time.

Gaylord Country Club is one of the few private clubs in northern Michigan allowing public play anytime. We invite you to become a member of our club for a day and experience the game of golf the way it was meant to be.

Northport Creek Golf Course

Northport CreekNorthport Creek is a par 35 course located within the Village of Northport – just blocks from the Northport Marina.

Designed by noted Michigan golf architect Jerry Matthews, the course focuses on the natural – using the contours and beauty of the old farm land to suggest the placement of the holes and the flow of the course.

Northport Creek’s owners have taken Matthew’s focus on the natural even further with the addition of solar to power the golf carts and the course irrigation, making Northport Creek the first solar powered golf course in the country!

The Briar

This is the type of course that you will enjoy playing time and time again. Each nine has its own distinct personality. The first, and longer nine, is a little more open, however, there are plenty of pine trees and streams to tantalize the wandering shot. The second nine holes meander through hardwood trees and ponds with significant rolling fairways. This nine is the shorter of the two nines, and accuracy is the key to keeping your score low.

The Briar boasts of fine conditions and excellent greens. The golf course has undergone a variety of improvements including new tee boxes, new course layout and a whole lot of TLC (Tender Loving Care). The new clubhouse has additional seating for up to 150 people.

Take the time on your next trip to northwest Michigan to find out why more and more golfers are visiting The Briar. You will find The Briar conveniently located between two great golf venues — Traverse City (27 miles away on M-37) and Cadillac (a short 15 miles away on M-115).

Hotels and Motels are just a few minutes away. Golfers will find many of these hotels
willing to put golf packages together that will make your stay even more enjoyable, or
call us and we will be happy to assist you in making your golf outing a pleasant one.

Lakewood on the Green

Lakewood on the Green is nestled in a picturesque setting just southwest of Cadillac, in Michigan’s North Country. Well traveled golfers and locals alike will tell you this course is one that lures you back again, and again! An entire community of homes have been carefully arranged on our 300+ acres, as to preserve the natural beauty of this tranquil setting surrounded in tall pines, shimmering lake waters, and natural wildlife.

Our 18 holes measure nearly 6,100 yards from the blue tees, with four par-3′s, twelve par-4′s, and two par-5′s, for a total par of 70. Gently rolling and winding fairways, strategic bunkers and shoreline from the 15-acre lake make for a scenic tour of the links.

Father and son team Norm & Pete Smith took 7 years to build the original course which first opened in 1980. By 1985, Lakewood on the Green was rated as “Michigan’s toughest, prettiest nine-hole golf course” in The Wedge (National Golf Foundation Market Report). After a few changes in name and ownership throughout the years (Wedgewood, Briar South), the property is now under new management and has returned to its original name in the spring of 2013.

Caberfae Peaks – The Peaks Course

Nestled in the heart of the Manistee National Forest, the Peaks Course is a unique world class golfing experience. Golf course architect Harry Bowers has done a magnificent job of designing the course to fit with the natural beauty of the surrounding land by using the knowledge and talent gained from his many years tutelage under Robert Trent Jones, Sr. His love of the land and sense of the environment is obvious throughout the course. The golfer crosses 10 bridges as he winds his way through a beautiful two mile nature trail. Each hole has its own unique personality providing a different and exciting challenge and complete isolation from other holes. All holes have a minimum of four different tee locations. The par-72 course will play 6682 yards from the back tees. The forward tees will play 4372 yards. Striking views, giant 75′ trees lining the fairways, miles of forested hills and valleys unblemished by condominium or housing developments, roads or farms, provide only pure wilderness land for the golfer to enjoy. The views are rare and not available from any other golf course in the Midwest.

Evergreen Resort Golf Courses

Winding its way through pine forests and glacier sculptured hills. the Spruce Course at Evergreen Resort provides the setting for a great golfing experience! Its contemporary design, with an extraordinary blend of bunkers, berms and water hazards, along with fast greens, offers a memorable game of golf. Whether you finish with a birdie or a bogie you’re left with a magnificent view of Lake Cadillac! Also, plan to fit in nine holes on the fun, sporty Norway Course. Specializing in outstanding golf packages and group outings.

The Spruce Golf Course
…is a classic design that can be enjoyed by all levels of players. The terrain features a mix of flat and rolling fairways as well as some very challenging holes.

Spruce would actually play quite easily, except for the scattered pines and hardwoods that line the fairways, making shot placement off the tee a priority. Four par-4’s play at 400-plus yards, with three more at around 390, proving ample opportunity to use your driver off the tee.

The tee boxes and fairways are well-maintained and the medium-sized, mildly undulating greens are some of the most consistent putting surfaces in the state. Yardage plaques and a 150-yard stake provide ample measurements from tee to green. Greatly appreciated are the hole diagrams at both the tee areas and on the scorecards.

For those staying here with us, the course is right outside your door. You’ll tee off a chip-shot from your cozy bed!

Norway Course

The 18-hole Spruce Course is complemented by our 9-hole Norway Course, which plays to between 2,792 and 2,358 yards. Norway is similar to Spruce in topography, but has wider fairways and less intrusive trees and foliage.

For those looking for a classic resort golf experience, Norway provides ample opportunity for high handicappers and casual golfers to enjoy the game.

One of the amenities missing at many upscale golf resorts is a layout that is user-friendly to beginners. Norway provides this and also is a pleasant experience for seasoned golfers looking to work in an extra nine.
